This was quite the tune that captured some of the frustrations not just for African Americans, but for many of those people that would be so easily called "liberal" today, but previously were just fighting for civil rights
And here is an interview with Gil Scott-Heron later in life telling you what the song meant to him, a new awareness where people wake up and see they have to be the first to change. It won't be televised because it will happen in your head first.
